I have heard many definitions of what a natural beauty is, and some absurdly ridiculous. So, here I am, publishing this entry with my unimportant thoughts.

Before you ladies start leaving comments about me having strong opinions, I would like to add a disclaimer – if you cannot accept my opinions, don’t read this entry. This entry is not here to offend people, and neither is it here to insult anyone.

Some people are extremely sensitive and can get pretty emotional to the things which I say, or type, in this case. Not that I have been receiving hate mails, but I do get non-positive comments. I, for one, welcome constructive criticism (I repeat, constructive criticism) but don’t say something that is irrelevant. I had this particular comment asking me not to discuss about skin colour because it is not nice for me to do so. To defend myself, I would like to say that discussing skin colour is something that relevant when it comes to choosing the right makeup colour. It has nothing to do with prejudice or racism, because all skin colour is beautiful to me. With that being said, I would urge all readers to understand my real intention and not jump into conclusion without giving the situation much thought. Geez.

Ok let’s get started.

My idea of a natural beauty is one who does not bother with self appearance, but is more concerned with making her personality appealing.

I feel a little irritated and agitated because I have seen many girls who want to be a ‘natural beauty’, yet defy most definitions and distort the meaning of what natural beauty should be.

My dear friend who works at Sephora told me that customers would walk into the store and request for certain type of makeup, stressing that they wouldn’t want to wear thick makeup like Sephora staff do because they believe in natural beauty. I’m pleased to tell you that my friend has high EQ and didn’t shove a Naked Palette into the lady’s mouth. That statement itself is really offensive!

Firstly, most staff at Sephora are extremely well groomed, with eyeshadow blended impeccably and people should learn how to wear makeup like them. Secondly, if they insist on having an au naturel face, they should not be buying makeup because having extra coverage on the face means it is not in its natural state anymore.  What ‘natural beauty’??

Also, men accompanying their female companions to Sephora should really keep quiet if they don’t know a thing about makeup. If you think we ladies should keep our mouths shut when you discuss 300mm f2.8, 650 metric horsepower and intel xeon E5620,  perhaps you should do the same when we talk about primer potions, makeup for ever HD foundation and drawing the perfect brow. We do not appreciate comments like ‘don’t wear so much foundation else your face will cake’, ‘your eyeliner is too thick’ and ‘don’t use green eyeshadow cause you are not Shrek’ unless you know what are you talking about.

For most people, it seems to me as if they do not know the difference between creating a natural, flawless finish and being a natural beauty. Creating a natural, flawless finish on a girl’s face means using the right amount of foundation, concealer and loose powder at the right area. But that does not necessary mean that the coverage is sheer or non-existent. Good makeup techniques will conceal flaws effectively, but not show how much makeup is used for that particular type of coverage. A good example of the ‘flawless, natural look’ would be the typical wedding makeup, and the makeup artist will use more makeup on any bride as compared to the ladies at Sephora whom you just accused of  ’wearing too much makeup’.

And by the way, a girl wearing dramatic eyeshadow and eyelashes and nothing else might have lesser coverage than the typical schoolgirl wearing foundation. Then again, if a girl knows how to do her eyeshadow, she probably would go all the way and highlight her nose, use blusher, draw her brows, etc.

In summary, natural beauties should wash their faces in rivers without the use of a facial foam, never ever think about enhancing their features through artificial means like aesthetic or plastic surgery, never ever lust over that new Bottega Veneta handbag or Jimmy Choo stilettos, never ever wear the slightest bit of makeup even though brands like Urban Decay, Benefit, Makeup For Ever, NARS has pretty little things to entice all Plain Janes in the world, never ever think about plucking their armpit hair and buy all their apparels without worrying if it matches anything in their wardrobe.

Be enlightened.

And the reason why am I not in town during Christmas is because my dear mom prefers spending it overseas where there is winter.

After pondering about it a little, I realized that it is true – it is not enjoyable to celebrate Christmas under the sweltering summer heat no matter how many presents I have under my Christmas tree (based on the assumption that I really have a decorative Christmas tree in home, and that I have a practice of putting presents under it).

In year 2010, I spent Christmas traveling in a little van for 8 hours.

In that 8 hours that I was traveling to and fro Ximen Ding (Taipei) to Xin Zhu, all I remember was stepping into the van from my Hotel in Ximen Ding, waking up at Xin Zhu market to eat the famous Gong Wan (Meatballs) and the Xin Zhu Mi Fen (Vermicelli), then waking up at my Hotel at Ximen Ding again.

I wouldn’t call that a meaningful Christmas, because all that happened that day was me getting indigestion and being unable to sleep at night.

If I were in town during Christmas, I would probably be celebrating Christmas in a more meaningful manner – attending a girls & booze pajamas sleepover party or playing poker and drinking booze at a chalet. Before I make myself sound like an alcoholic, I would like to declare that I am a teetotal. Well, almost, because being inebriated isn’t my style. Just kidding. No, I’m actually serious. Kidding.

But what a meaningful Christmas is to me is not just about how I spend it, regardless of which location in the world I go, but to feel happy on that day itself. Although spending Christmas in a van kinda suck, I stayed happy the whole time because I was shopping non-stop during the 2 weeks I was away.

That means that I didn’t only celebrate 12 days of Christmas, I celebrated 14. Two weeks of shopping? I am definitely happy, which makes Christmas meaningful for me.

Last Christmas, I was in Singapore because I came back from Hong Kong on 24th December, and only left for Bangkok on the 28th December. I thought its been a while since I celebrated Christmas here, so the occasion was gonna be wonderful.

Boy, was I wrong. But being the very magnanimous person that I am, I am going to forget all unhappy issues and focus on the happy ones.  And what can make me happier than receiving fabulous gifts? I am getting excited and am frantically typing away as I think about my new babies.

Lo and behold, I am going to post up some of the cosmetic and skincare items that I received for Christmas:

#1. Clio Professional Kill Black waterproof brush liner – Available at Watsons @ $25.90

Review: This brush is extremely easy to manipulate and it glides on smoothly on my eyelids. It is not difficult to achieve the cat eye effect as seen on the picture above. The colour of the eyeliner is not as black as gel liner, but it is perfect for lazy days because I am getting really sick of washing my gel liner brush after usage.

#2. Sponge to roll on my BB cream / liquid foundation.

I haven’t used it yet, but I do have similar products like this. This baby is great for blending BB cream or liquid foundation without leaving any streaks on the face due to its round texture. It is also a great substitute for a stippling brush, which creates a flawless finish for base makeup.

#3. Face masks from Taiwan.

Errrrr, you guys already know what’s this for. Shall skip the description.

#4. L’Oreal Infaillible eyeshadow in Gold Mine. ($11 at Chinatown! Cheaper than Watsons/Guardian/departmental stores/overseas!)

This was sold out everywhere and my sweet Santa secretly got it for me. It is too pretty to be used, so I shall keep it for a very, very special occasion before I open it. This particular eyeshadow is also waterproof and lasts for long hours. I love it! <3

#5. KATE eyeshadow

I think the people around me have already established that I have a penchant for Earthy-tones. Also, like a typical Singaporean, I prefer to keep my eyeshadow neutral because people always have nasty comments about brightly-coloured eyeshadow. (Never mind their lack of appreciation for art and beauty, it’s not right for people to insist that it is ugly because opinions are subjective.)

This shimmery palette highlights the inner corner of my eyes beautifully and creates a “popping” effect. Loveeee itttttt. I can barely sit still now. It’s 2am but I feel like playing and mixing colours.

Do you guys swoon over makeup as much as I do?

Part of me feels excited about dressing up (trust me, I know some girls’ main purpose of celebrating the Chinese New Year is to doll up and look good), and part of me dreads the visiting because some relatives just don’t have good things coming out of their mouths. And as usual, I have to bite my tongue before I talk about one’s husband’s China mistress, or how loser another relative’s 30 year old jobless daughter is.

This year, my cousin who is the same age as me has decided to bring her boyfriend to visit our relatives. Of course I have to be prepared to counter such market spoilers. If the relatives asked where is my boyfriend, my reason this year would be ‘mummy doesn’t like my Indian friend’ and hopefully this would allow them to think about racial issues while I switch the topic to ministerial pay.

But the purpose of this entry is not about annoying relatives, but to share some tips on makeup that won’t make you look like a smudged idiot by the end of the day.

I have been really lazy, and I couldn’t be bothered to dye my hair or paint my nails just because I could get more compliments out of it. But as I am typing this, I have a good mind to colour block my nails using pastel colours this Chinese New Year.

Having makeup done properly suddenly occurred to me when my dear friend decided to party tomorrow night. That means I have to make my makeup last for a good 16 hours. I know I can reject her, but not when I’m feeling this down and a good friend could just be the solution(a great distraction?) to my problems.

So, here goes.

First and foremost, to make your makeup last longer, you probably would need waterproof ones, like those the girls from the local synchronized swimming team uses. This formula should work for at least 5 hours, if not the full 16.

Foundation – You may wish to try the compact foundation from Paul and Joe ($67) as many people I know swears by it.
Eyeshadow – To make eyeshadow stay and not crease (if you have deep set eyes), use Urban Decay’s primer potion ($30).
Eyeliner – My favourite waterproof eyeliner from M.A.C ($27). Washing my face with cleanser wouldn’t get rid of it even.
Lipstick – Stila long wear lip colour ($36) to minimize touchups.
Concealer –  Definitely Amazing concealer (You can find this at Sephora at $45)
Hair – Go with L’Oreal Elnett hairspray. This baby wouldn’t let you down.
Mascara / falsies – Use the new Maybelline The falsies volume express. This is the bomb. ($17)

Having the above would save the first half of the day. What about the second half?

That is where you whip out your mirror and makeup kit like you’re a bride.

#1. Be sure to bring blotter.
#2. Use loose powder, or compact foundation to reduce the shine on your face.
#3. If your falsies are tearing off, use glue and re-do your lashes.
#4.  Concealer gone? Touch up!
#5. Re-apply lipstick every few hours. (Don’t try using Nyx round lipstick)

And that should keep you looking fresh all day long!

My friends always promise to come by my place to play makeup, but we end up watching movies or slack instead.

Thankfully, I have a sis who is willing to let me doll her up. She’s like my huge barbie doll, and she can even fit into my clothes.

(I don’t know why would anyone agree to be my model because my curling iron would damage their hair, and removing makeup is such a chore. By the time sis reads this entry, there’s no point crying over spilt milk.)

One such collection is the M.A.C glitter and ice collection. By the time I got down to writing this entry, winter (that’s what this collection is about) is over and the posters at M.A.C stores are currently changed to Daphne Guiness for M.A.C.

Anyway, I first caught sight of the glitter and ice posters at Sephora, ION Orchard and loved it!

Johnny Weir couldn’t look any more gorgeous in the poster. In case you didn’t know, he is a figure skater and is an Olympic athlete.

This collection is inspired by ice-skating, but I took notice of Johnny’s armpit hair and discoloured nipples more than his skate shoes. Oh, I’m a terrible person.

This entire collection is about glitter, and I am amazed how these cosmetic companies find something ‘new’ to market every season and make people excited to buy.

I was excited when I made my purchase, I was excited when I took pictures of the items, and I am definitely excited about writing this entry.

When I was buying my cosmetic and skincare products from Hong Kong, I was eager to have my old skincare products replaced for 2012 because using the same products will cause my skin to be immuned to it, thus making it not as effective as new ones.

But damn, I’ve been using my little jar of 50ml moisturizer for more than a year and it’s nowhere near empty. Time to slap cream on every few hours!

So here’s some of the skincare and cosmetics which I bought from Hong Kong.

Majorlica Majorca Honey Pump Gloss Neo in BE 133

This gloss costs $12.90 in Singapore (available at Watsons) and I got it for HKS44, which is about SGD 7.50.

The reason why I bought this cause I went for Majorlica Majorca’s Glass trick workshop with my little baby sis recently and she wanted it so much. Since it costs a fraction of the price, I think that is quite an incentive for me to buy.

Calvin Klein creme eyeshadow in Gold Velvet

Bought it for about SGD10 after discount. The original price for this product is Hk$135, which is about SGD 23. I haven’t seen this in Singapore yet but it’s approximately USD$20 overseas.

This is a great buy, because it’s a good substitute for the L’Oreal infaillable gold eyeshadow which I didn’t buy, and I got it at an awesome price.

Revlon bedroom eyes eyeliner

I haven’t seen this product around in Singapore too. But a quick check online confirmed that it retails for about SGD 13.

But guess what? I got it for approximately SGD 1.80. Less than 2 bucks!

Recently, I have been using a lot of gel liner. But sometimes I use liquid liner because it’s less of a chore as I need not wash the brush.

Estee Lauder eyeshadow in Sugar Biscuit Satin and Chocolate Bliss Matte

Once thing I dislike about Estee Lauder’s products is that the cover always gets scratched easily and it looks pretty obvious. My Bobbi Brown products get scratched on the surface too when placed in my makeup pouch, but it does not look as obvious as Estee Lauder’s products scratched. In comparison with the products in the market, I gotta applaud Chanel for having the most scratch-resistant casing.

Since this new baby costs only SGD 3.10, I don’t have grounds to complain.

This product is not sold individually so there’s no price for it. However, it usually comes together with mascara, and other products like lipstick or skincare and sold as a travel set.

I remember heading to the 7-11 to buy some magazines (apparently HK sells magazines from Taiwan too. Yipee!) and passed by mannings (which is Guardian in Singapore).

I stopped by and picked this up cause I heard about a lot of people raving about this after Makiyo came to Singapore to promote Sophie Monk’s products. And since I have gotten everything else at a better rate, this must be cheaper in Hong Kong.

Sometimes I really wonder why is this brand Sophie Monk, because when I first heard about this brand, I thought it’s the actress from Sex and Death 101. Lol.

By the way, I can’t recall how much is this sold in Guardian, and how much I got it for.

It retails at SGD 16.90-18.90 at drugstores in Singapore, and SGD 10 in Hong Kong.

Of course I bought and brought 3 bottles home!

This is sold in Singapore for SGD 20.90, and I got it for SGD 18.

Lesson learnt. When in Hong Kong, don’t buy drugstore brands that you can get locally. Get the high end brands and there will be more savings!

Schwarskopf Osis + Dust It Mattifying Powder

I have been dying to get this because it works better than most hair wax. A little of this goes a loooong way, and is perfect for keeping my flat hair volumized.

I have seen it in the little shops near AMK Hub that sells lots of FMCG products, and it costs about SGD 26.

Guess what? I got it for SGD 16! <3 <3 Gotta love Hong Kong.

Shu Uemura eyelash curler

Last but not least, I got this award-winning eyelash curler to replace my old one. This eyelash curler from Shu Uemura does not only crimp my lashes perfectly, it will never ever crimp my flesh and make my curling lash experience painful.

Just in case you were wondering if I posted up some entries while I was overseas, the answer is no, I didn’t. Although I had internet access in Hong Kong and Thailand, (and even replied to some of your emails) I didn’t spend my vacation writing entries.

In fact, I had the entries scheduled to be published to ensure that the blog does not die off while I was away.

Although I have these ‘emergency entries’ saved, publishing them earlier means that I will have more and more backlog entries. Le sigh. I will try to get my new entries up as soon as possible. Because makeup and skincare changes every season, and by the time I have them updated, it will already be history.

I was in Hong Kong from the 20th December to 24th December and it is my third consecutive year going to Hong Kong in December.

As usual, going to Hong Kong during winter means that I can’t buy wearable clothes back because the weather in Singapore is too warm, and wearing winter clothes (that’s what that’s sold during December) is just not practical.

Most Singaporean girls like myself love going to Wang Jiao Zhong Xin 旺角中心 to hunt for bargain clothes. But going there during winter means I see jackets and outerwear everywhere.

Soap & Glory Eye Brightening Moisture Serum ($26)

It is hydrating, but isn’t as effective as the Biotherm Aquasource Eye Perfection.

(I know Ginvera has the ball bearing eye cream/gel/serum too, but I don’t think I will try that. I have the Garnier one, it didn’t work for me.)

This brightening cream has a hint of lavender in it, unlike the Aquasource one which is transluscent. I feel that it is the lavender colour which reduces dullness, like lavender concealer. It will only make eyes brighter temporarily each time after usage.

For about a year now, I have been using Biotherm Aquasource Eye Perfection ($69). At the beginning, it was really effective. My fine lines disappeared and skin around the eye area became more moisturized. But gradually, my eye didn’t look as bright as when I first used it.

Then, I realised that my skin is already immuned to the product. I should constantly remind myself to change my skincare every 3 months.

Lesson learnt. No more going for the rolley-rolley balls. Perhaps using my finger to massage good gel or cream in  would be more effective. There are thousands and thousands of skincare product out there in the market, and I don’t believe I won’t find one that works for me.

It sounds like a dumb question, and people will answer it with “just slap it on!”

However, the process of applying BB cream or foundation is not that simple and there are a lot of techniques that most people don’t follow.

More often than not, I follow my routine of using my BB cream, concealer, then brush loose powder all over my face to remove excess shine and set the makeup.

But on some days, I don’t feel like using so many products. How do I achieve a youthful look without using multiple layers of product?

I’m going to share my way of how I make myself look healthier with just one product. Don’t scorn, I look like a fragile old maid without makeup on.

Here we go:

#1. Protect your skin

If you’re using foundation, don’t forget your sunscreen. Sunscreen is really important because UV rays damage our skin in the long run, and using a high SPF underneath your makeup would definitely help!

If you’re using BB cream, congrats – because you can skip the sunscreen. Also, BB cream is great for dry skin as most BB creams comes with moisturizing agents.

In case you didn’t know, I’m definitely a BB cream user. I don’t like how foundation cakes up my face and I don’t mind little imperfections showing from the sheer coverage of BB cream.

#2. Don’t use the wrong colour

Buying the right colour of foundation is extremely important! We don’t want to look like we have a mask on, right?

#3. Use the right amount

I always squirt my BB cream onto the back of my left hand instead of putting it directly on my face.

Then, I will dab just a little on my cheeks, forehead and jaw.

This way, I will not use too much product on my face and excess BB cream will make me look as white as liquid paper.

Also, the BB cream on my hand will be warmed up slightly and application would be smoother.

#4. Sponge, brush or fingers?

Some people prefer using a foundation brush because they are able to manipulate the product better by blending or patting whenever they need to.

I prefer using my fingers because it blends better and there will definitely be no streaks left on my face. For my dark spots , I will dab it with more product for extra coverage.

#5 Blending it evenly

I always blend outwards, from the centre of my face – just like applying moisturizer. Don’t neglect your ears, hairline, and neck!

#6. Skip the concealer

I have extremely dark eye circles, and you can see it from my pictures. But sometimes I don’t use concealer at all.

Instead, I just pat a little more BB cream underneath my eyes to get more coverage.

If you don’t feel secure without the concealer, always remember the rule – less is more.

Lastly, just brush on loose powder if you can’t stand the extra shine and you’re good to go!

Ulzzang is defined as “best face” or “good-looking” in Korean, and the “Eoljjang” is someone who is popular based on their appearance. (Damn superficial as these Eoljjangs get celebrity status because their popularity is based on their appearance and nothing else.)

Basically, to achieve the Eoljjang look, you’ll need a doll face, with huge eyes, perfectly sculpted nose and clear skin.

I don’t have clear skin at all, so I am going to use makeup to cheat. As for the doll face, enlarging my eyes would do the trick. My nose is far from perfect, and I need a nose job more than anyone else.

But in this tutorial, I will just focus on the eye.

Wore my Super Barbie Eye lens in Bambi Grey.

I have extreme dark eye circles, but nothing makeup can’t conceal.

After application of BB cream from Hanskin and concealer from my 15-concealer palette, my dark eye circles become less obvious.

I used BB cream from Hanskin from Korea, because I needed a fairer, porcelain skin. BB creams from Japan and U.S will not be able to give me that kind of effect. If you want to look extremely fair, BB cream from Korea will be perfect for you.

Drawn brows with my Daiso eyebrow pencil in Black. Korean girls like extremely thick brows to keep them looking young, but I can’t carry off the thick eyebrow look so I drew it the normal way.

Trying really hard to balance both sides..

Highlighted my brow bone with the lightest beige from my concealer palette, and used eyeliner to draw the outer half of my lower line.

This immediately made my eyes bigger and more enticing.

Then, I used eyeliner to line the outer half of my upper lash and joined it with my lower lash line with a ‘V’.

My eyeliner is Castledew Colourshot Pencil in Black (non-waterproof). I love this eyeliner because it is double-sided, and there’s a pretty pink sparkly rhinestone on top of each side of the cover.

(Blurred my face because I am extremely shy, haha)

As you can see, I used a cotton swab to smudge the eyeliner to make it less harsh.

Used falsies for my left eye.

Because I will be going away from 20 December this year to 3rd January 2012, Momsy made my siblings and I promise her that we will pack our rooms before December. Hence, I took the initiative and cleaned some parts of my room before Spring cleaning becomes more difficult than ever.

(Wait, isn’t it still ‘Fall/Winter’ now? *ignoring the fact that it is Summer all year in Singapore*)

Then, I found some makeup that I bought more than a year ago, from ESPRIQUE and Estee Lauder. In mint condition.

Suddenly, I remembered that all makeup has an expiry date and I panicked. Immediately, I went to check. I took the little kit and looked at every corner. Then, I saw the expiry date – September 2014. Sigh of relief.

If it is already expired, I would probably stab myself. Someone please remind me to think 2 times, 3 times, x times before I purchase anything.

I know that I have too many eye shadow colours, blushers, BB creams and lip colour for my own good, so I shall keep them all and play with different styles everyday, do more tutorials so none of it would go to waste. *beams

In these pictures, she is in her school uniform because she took her Econs exam earlier on.

Young people should not wear too much makeup, so I gave her a very nude and subtle look. As she is still young, she doesn’t have wrinkles or dry skin which makes makeup application extremely easy.

The only problem I have with her was her dark eye circles. Poor students of Singapore need to slog their lives away, and most of them end up having dark eye circles. But then I think it is genetic, because my dark eye circles and eyebags are really horrid.

She doesn’t allow me to post her naked face, so I shall start with the picture after I applied BB cream for her.

I envy her for already looking gorgeous with bare minimum makeup. She only has BB cream on, and nothing else!

However, I have a problem with her eyebrows. She doesn’t allow me to trim her brows because she’s going for facial next week, and claims that her facial therapist will do a good job. So let’s just make do with her droopy brows.

Then, I used highlighter and a little blusher to give her face more dimension.

Sigh, God ain’t fair. God already made her 10kg lighter than me, why must give her radiant skin too??

For some reason, her eyelashes refused to curl. I decided to give up and ignore it.

I used Anna Sui Long Lash Mascara to extend the length of her lashes.

Then, I smoked her eyes a little using Bobbi Brown’s eyeshadow in Chino and Caviar.

So how would we know which ones to use? Brushes comes in different bristles, different length, but the right brush will distribute the product even on your face and give you the look that you want.

Here’s a guideline:

This is a large dome shaped brush, which is usually used to pick up powder such as foundation and loose powder.  I use this brush to set my BB cream with loose powder as it picks up the particles and evenly distribute it on my face. I also like the fact that coverage is slightly sheer.

I use a smaller sized dome-shaped brush for my blusher. As the bristles are soft, it will give me a soft, sheer coverage so my face will not end up looking like a monkey’s backside. A good alternative will be an angled brush, where more pigment is placed on the curve of the cheeks to create a ‘heavier’ look.

On days when I am not too lazy to do my highlighting and contouring, I would too use the above two brushes to pick up some shimmer to highlight my nose, cheeks, etc.

This is a Kabuki brush, which a short handle.

This particular brush has coarser bristles and picks up more powder than other brushes. If you need a thicker layer of foundation, this brush will be perfect for you.

For days when I want a thicker coverage, I use the kabuki brush to brush loose powder all over my face to set my liquid BB cream.

Today, I put together my sponge applicator and a non-luxury brand 28 warm eyeshadow palette from makeup shop, and show that it is possible to use both.

I used the larger side of the sponge applicator to do the smudging

It is easier to blend with an eyeshadow blending brush, but it is not impossible to blend with with a sponge applicator. It just requires a little more time and effort, I admit.

As for the eyeshadow, people believe that cheaper makeup lacks the quality that more expensive makeup possess. An example of bad quality eyeshadow could be one that does not last for a short hour, and perhaps not as pigmented as those that are more expensive.

That might be true to a certain extent, because Silkygirl’s eyeshadow palette is crap and Lancome’s one does wonders. But I’ve also seen crappy eyeshadow from a reputable brand overseas, and extremely awesome, intense and pigmented ones like L’Oreal’s new infaillable eye shadow in Gold Mine ($14.90).

I think it is subjective because I know of some people who prefers a less intense colour so blending is easier. But what I think is really unacceptable is the chalky kind of eye makeup from Daiso that falls all over my face, ruining my concealer and BB cream which I spent a hell lot of time on.

To me, it is more important to check out what ingredients are in the cosmetic product that we are using. I know it is safe to purchase makeup from counters because the ingredients are all approved. In the 28 warm eyeshadow palette, the eyeshadow are made with mica as the main ingredient. It can be quite troublesome to check out every ingredient, but that is one of the best way to tell if cheap makeup is safe for usage.

The labels 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 are the colours that I used to create the Asian Chinese Smokey Eye.

1 – All over the eyelid
2 – Outer half of the eye
3 – Upper lash line, blended upwards
4 – A tiny dot on the upper lash line, blended upwards
5 – Inner corner of the eye and lower lash line

And here’s what I created from just using a few sponge applicators and the palette above:

(Don’t judge too quickly, these pictures only show the eyeshadow effect. I didn’t complete my look with proper lashes.)

There you go. As you can see, the eyeshadow is quite pigmented. It is also possible to get rid of harsh edges by blending the eyeshadow with a clean sponge applicator.

It was awesome because I love freebies, I love skincare, and I love my friends for giving me theirs, although I don’t understand why they don’t want to keep it because all girls need skincare products. I think they saw my enthusiasm when I got excited over the little Bvlgari paperbag, and decided to give theirs to me to satisfy my ‘aunty’ needs. I guess the reason why I bought this is because I realized that I don’t have much time to paint my nails and wait for them to dry. Furthermore, celebrities like Lady Gaga and Rihanna constantly have these things pasted on them.

Bourjois Smile Enhancing Gloss

I was at John Little last week and was checking out Bourjois.

Then, the sales staff popped out and said, ‘Looking for gloss? This one very good. Is from Bourjois. Is from Chanel you know? Singapore products, all very safe one. One ingredient not good only, government will not allow us to sell it. You know, I also have customers from China coming to buy Singapore makeup? They also say it is very safe.”

She’s extremely cute, but I am quite terrified of sales people because they talked to me not because they really want to share the product with me. They talked to me because they want to sell their products to me, and sometimes a little overly persuasive.

I hate to feel pressurized to buy anything, so I walked away. Therefore, I did not manage to find out the price of this product. But it should be under $20.

What is so special about this product, is not the lip gloss. This product comes with a teeth-whitening gel on the other side of the gloss.

The colour of the gloss is extremely pretty too! What is a better combination than lip gloss and teeth whitening?

For those who have yellow teeth like me, go try it out! I am waiting to go Hong Kong next month and see if I can get it at a better price. Else, I will come back to Singapore and buy it anyway.

Now, I think I figured why the sales staff kept stressing on the product being safe – No white teeth is worth having if the agent to whiten my teeth poisons me to death.

O.P.I The Muppets

Out of all the bottles, there was a particular one that was glaring at me.

Yes, you guessed it. It is the Rainbow Connection.

I know it is not at all significant in this picture. But I swear, if you walked past it, you would too take a second look at it.

It is retailing at $23.90 and I was quite reluctant to purchase it. Not only the price is steep for a bottle of nail polish, I know that if I had purchased it, I would use a few times and chuck it aside.

Then it struck me – I can DIY my own Rainbow Connection at home!

I made a quick mental recall of what do I have at home that I can use for making this polish and Voila! I have everything I needed at home!

While I was in my own world, I got more and more excited by the minute because this nail colour is so perfect for this season and if it lasts long enough, I can even wear the colour to watch The Muppets which is showing in cinemas from 8th December onwards!

So here is how I DIY my own version:

A little clear polish would do!

Use a steady and solid piece of paper to slide glitter into bottle

Something like that.. you get the drift.

By the way, you guys know how hard it is to remove glitter nail polish right? Those who had their nails done with glitter before should know that a nail file must be used in order to get every single glitter out of the nail.

That said, I am not going to remove this Rainbow nails by myself. I am going to pay for an express manicure just to get these off. Anyway, an express manicure from Far East Plaza costs only $8.

In case you are wondering what a primer is, it works as a base before foundation is used so that makeup will adhere better to the skin. It will also make your makeup last longer. A foundation primer will also help prevent clogged pores, and hence prevent acne, skin irritation and breakouts.

Choosing a foundation primer would depend on your skin type. There are primers out there that can combat dry skin and control excess sebum production. But be careful, because if your skin is oily and you use a primer that is too emollient, your skin can look more oily than before.

For dry skin, it is best to use a cream based primer that contains ingredients such as glycerol. For oily skin, you might want to use a gel based primer which can minimize sebum production.

One primer that I like is the M.A.C Prep + Prime skin (Picture shown above)

Apart from making makeup last longer, the smooth texture of this primer hydrates the skin and minimizes fine lines. It allows foundation to glide on the skin, and help it last all day.

This primer also even out skin tone and creates a nice, smooth finish after application of makeup.

This pair costs S$45. Really gorgeous.

Here, I put 3 brands of (very affordable) blue eyeshadow to the test. They are from ZA, Revlon and L’Oreal.

The image that you see below are swatches of the eyeshadow colours from each palette. I applied the eyeshadow using my fingers.

#1 – ZA Dramatic Eye Colour Palette

This palatte is extremely shimmery! Also, I loved that it is extremely pigmented. Application of this product was super easy as it glided on my skin.

There was also a pearly effect on my skin, and is easily my favourite amongst the three palettes.

However, this product has the ugliest packaging. There you go – don’t judge a book by its cover!

Price: $17.50 for 4 colours

#2 – Revlon CustomEyes™ Shadow & Liner

This palette has very matte colours, not as much shimmer as the ZA dramatic eye colour. The dark colours are also extremely intense.

As the dark colours are really intense, more light coloured shadow need to be used to make the look ‘less black’.

It is the most pigmented amongst the three palettes, but it comes off more easily than the rest. In other words, the staying power is not as good as the other two.

The five colours are really complementary and I love the all colours on this palette.

Price: $18.90 for 5 colours

#3 – L’Oreal Quad Pro

I don’t know if the product really works for me.

The white on this palette has high shimmer, and I love it. The shadows are also easy to blend, and glided on my skin effortlessly.

Although it is silky soft, the eyeshadows (especially the black one) is a little less pigmented than I expected it to be.

This might work for people who wants to create a soft smoky look, but I would rather my eyeshadow to be very pigmented so a little of the product can be used to create my smokey eye instead of using a lot of product to create the same look.

This product has the prettiest packaging, and this is good enough to entice me to make a purchase.

Price: $22.90 for 4 colours

Biotherm SKIN.ERGETIC

The advertisement targets the modern woman who is going through a hectic work life, multi-tasking, fatique, stress, diet and coming in contact with pollution. It also mentions that signs of fatigue includes loss of radiance, uneven complexion, visible pores, unrefined skin texture and roughness.

This main component of this product is broccoli, which is rich in antioxidants and boosts skin appearance.

“Present in the revolutionary SKIN.ERGETIC serum, it eliminates free radicals and stimulates cellular renewal, effectively “waking up”, tired skin. So it looks radiant, fresh and youthful, day after day!”

So I tried this serum.

This serum is a little different from the rest of the Biotherm series, as it is paraben-free and contains natural ingredients.

I found this serum to be a little special, as there is this activator which I can click and shake before first-time usage. However, product only lasts for 3 months after activating.

The texture of this serum is non-sticky, and feels good on my skin. Immediately, I felt like my skin is very well hydrated. My skin also looks more radiant and refreshed.

I can’t say much about it repairing my skin such that it stop signs of ageing because I could not stand the smell of this product.

After using it a couple of times, I got extremely nauseous after sniffing this product which smells of burnt rubber and wax. The smell is so strong that I could not stand using it for more than a week. Any longer, I will barf in people’s face.

I think most people will not mind the smell, because I have heard really positive things about this particular product. But it definitely puts me off.

Since people have so many good stuff to share about this product, you might like to try it for yourself. It is retailing at Sephora for $99.

It was never easy for me to maintain my face with all the skincare products because I was born with dry skin and eczema.

It does not only attack me every now and then, cause I itch every single day. It really is tough for me to go through this, bearing the pain and itch and the scars it leaves everywhere on my body.

Having these sores and scars can make me really depressed because it hurts whenever I move, and I am not able to do anything about it.

I am sharing this because I want you to know that even though I have sores and dry skin, I am able to use makeup to make me look beautiful still. And I am proud of it.

If you can’t embrace your flaws, you may choose to play up your best features so the attention would be on it.

But beauty comes from within, and I embrace my flaws. We all should learn that not everybody is born perfect, and it really is our scars and other physical features that makes us truly unique.

By embracing our flaws, it is learning how to love ourselves.  If celebrities can embrace their flaws, so can we. And my definition of beauty is definitely not physical.

In all, if you don’t learn to embrace your flaws, no amount of makeup could cover up your imperfections.

Makeup is subjective, but there are girls who don’t complete their looks.

These few days, I have been seeing many girls who don’t put on their makeup correctly. No one is expected to “paint” a flawless face like makeup counter girls. The kind of wrong makeup that I have in mind is the kind of makeup that will make strangers take a second look – in a negative way.

My makeup is not perfect, I admit.

If my friends are reading this blog, they probably will squint their eyes and say “Don’t bullshit me, lah. Your undereye forever patchy”. That, is absolutely true. But that is because I was born with a physical defect – eczema.

Unfortunately, my eczema does not only cause my skin to itch and flake at my back, arms, neck, back of my knees, inner thighs, back of my hand, fingers, it also causes my eyes to itch and flake. I have been seeing a skin doctor and my skin is under control now.

For someone with horrid eczema caused by stress and the bad weather in Singapore, my skin is extremely well controlled. Even my skin doctor said that my skin is well controlled and nobody would know that I have such a terrible physical defect. And trust me, it’s not a good thing to go through.

It’s a vicious cycle. I am always trying to get rid of the eczema, but the teasing and negative comments from people around me would cause me to be depressed and aggravate my skin condition, making it worse than ever. Some friends I have. If you are a friend who talked about my eczema before, and reading this entry, you better feel guilty!

So, as much as I try to conceal, moisturize and make my eyebags look better. It will still remain dark, wrinkly and sometimes patchy.

Let’s get back to the point and I shall list the mistakes of wrong eye makeup:

#1. Eye makeup without concealer – No super eye makeup can look attractive if you don’t conceal dark eye circles.

#2. False eyelashes without curling real lashes – Why do you need a gap in between like a crocodile mouth? Totally ugly.

#3. Too much mascara – It doesn’t give you longer and thicker lashes. It gives you insect legs.

#4. Eyeshadow that’s not blended – Dark brown and light brown goes well together but eyeshadow should not be in swatches.

#5. Unmatching eyeshadow colours – Like red and green, or yellow and blue. It can be extremely gorgeous when blended properly. But most of the time it’s a nay, not a yay.

#6. Heavy eye makeup with heavy lipstick – No focus can be pretty confusing.

#7. Too much eyeshadow – Some people extend their eyeshadow way out to their temples and elongate their eyes, changing the entire proportion of the face. It might look good for a fashion or beauty shoot, but it’s definitely not great for outing with the girls.

#8. Eyeliner on the lower lash line without eyeshadow – For people who want to look as if they’re depressed and suicidal.

#9. Eye makeup without plucked eyebrow – Find girls like that in all the Polytechnics in Singapore. I don’t blame them. Every girl needs to go through that phase. But if you’re 30 and is a veteran in smoking your eyes, heading out with messy brows is embarrassing yourself.

#10. Uneven winged tip eyeliner – Inevitable, I know. Especially when you wake up with day with uneven eyelids. It’s just not pleasant to look at a longer winged-tip on one eye.

#11. Incorrect concealer colour – Even I sometimes have ash-coloured eyebags after using concealer. That is usually an indicator of your concealer being to light. If that happens, select a darker shade of concealer.

#12. False eyelashes without using eyeliner – Nope, we don’t like to see your glue.

#13. Eyeshadow colour that doesn’t match skin tone – Like a Chinese girl wearing only Yellow eyeshadow, and Indian girl wearing only Black eyeshadow.

#14. Mascara which smudges and ruin eye makeup – Like how I was damn disturbed by the guy (yes, a guy) at Sephora with smudged mascara above and under his eyes. Not a pretty sight.

#15. Overly plucked brows – This can be resolved. Just fill your brows with pencil.

Well, wasn’t that something! I think fifteen is a great number to stop at, else I would be repeating my points.

Remember, no makeup in this world is perfect, but there are many ways to ruin perfectly beautiful makeup. That’s why experimenting makeup and find out what we look best in is extremely important.

Makeup is subjective, but we want to make ourselves gorgeous, not ruin how we look.
